While we all admit that unsolicited commercial email is a real pain, I sometimes wonder if the anti-spam zealots are going too far. Last week I was in Costa Rica, and the only practical way to communicate home was by email. I maintain an AOL account just for that purpose when traveling, and was amazed to find out when I got home, that I only received about half of the email which was sent - some of which was important.

It is high time to stop making excuses and stop this junk email. Make use of anti spam filters to prevent the junk mails from reaching your inbox. In order to keep your mailbox free of spam mails, a little knowledge on the various anti spam filters and their usage and functions is a must. There are a number of email spam filters that you can use in your computer for the Windows users. eXpurgate, requiring two different email IDs, works well in filtering spam. SpamPal identifies the well known spammers with the help of spam blacklists. POPFile are very effective in categorizing and separating the unsolicited mails from the personal messages. Some of the other effective spam filters include Spam Bully, Spam Inspector, and Zaep.

Everyone who uses the internet has more than likely been targets of spam at one time or another. At first they are easy to dismiss for internet experienced persons, however for the inexperienced user of the internet, the messages contained can sometimes be intimidating and in some instances lead to trouble (I will come onto a personal example later).
